Welcome to James Routledge Photography

My work began with a focus on landscapes, drawn to the way light and weather shape the land and create atmosphere. That interest has widened to include people within their environments, the living world around them, and the quieter narratives that emerge through routine, proximity and place.

I’m particularly interested in atmosphere – moments shaped by light and season – and images that suggest a story without needing to explain it. Whether photographing remote landscapes, rural communities, animals within working environments, or the quieter edges of cities, I’m drawn to situations where land and life are closely connected.

I grew up in the UK with strong ties to rural and farming landscapes, and the natural environment continues to underpin how I see and work. Although I’ve lived in London for over 40 years, much of my photography takes place away from the city, or at its edges, where traces of nature and human activity overlap.

Photography has developed alongside a career in real estate consultancy, and the two have quietly informed one another – both grounded in observation, patience, and an interest in how people use, shape and respond to spaces around them.
